Wetumpka, AL Bibb Graves Bridge T-Shirt by Hometown Heritage
Bibb Graves Bridge in Wetumpka, Alabama
Coosa River has seen its fair share of bridges, with the first known bridge being built across the river in 1830. Within a few years, the bridge appears to have been destroyed, and a new toll bridge was built in 1834. Unfortunately, the bridge was swept away in 1844. However, the people of Wetumpka, Alabama have always been resourceful, and they completed a covered bridge later that year. Disaster struck again during the Great Flood of 1866, and a new iron bridge wouldn’t be built until 1887. By 1927, the bridge was in need of serious repairs, and the town’s commissioners believed it more prudent to build a brand-new bridge. After making arrangements with the state to pay for half of the bridge (arguments arose on what it should be constructed with and how much each party would pay), construction began in the late 1920s, and the Bibb Graves Memorial Bridge was completed in 1931. The bridge is the only bridge south of the Mason-Dixon Line suspended with reinforced concrete arches and is the most well-known landmark in the city of Wetumpka.
