Prattville, AL Cotton Gin Factory T-Shirt by Hometown Heritage
Cotton Gin in Prattville, Alabama
In 1836, the Prattville Gin Factory was built by Daniel Pratt, the namesake of Prattville, Alabama. Originally a small sawmill that used the Autauga Creek to power all of the factory’s machines, Pratt eventually built the three-story brick building in 1854 with the idea of producing 1,000 cotton gins a year. Pratt believed the factory would be a great way for poor whites to obtain work and could foster a positive atmosphere based on high morals. Pratt Gins became some of the most popular in the world, with Pratt selling his machinery to companies as far away as Russia and France. The factory greatly aided Prattville in becoming an industrial mecca, with a plethora of manufacturers and craftsmen moving to the town. During the Civil War, and with a few changes, the factory began producing resources for the Confederate Army, including uniforms, before switching back to manufacturing gins after the war ended. Prattville, which was greatly affected by the war, was kept afloat by Pratt and his factory. The factory continued to produce goods until 2012 and was recently designated a historical landmark by the City of Prattville.
